Six convents (Ebstorf, Isenhagen, Lüne, Medingen, Walsrode and Wienhausen) in the Lüneburg Heath region between Hanover and Hamburg, hold a largely unknown treasure trove of mediaeval musical documents. The Medingen prayer-books, the Wienhausen Song Manuscript and the Ebstorf Songbook have been the subject of music historical and interdisciplinary research for some years, but until now only the two songbooks have been inventarised. As part of a major research project (supported by well-known foundations in Lower Saxony), which includes both a musicological survey of the material and a documentation on CD, the author’s intensive archival research has brought to light over 100 more documents dating from the 12th to the 16th centuries. This is the first catalogue of the material. A chapter on musical iconography offers insights into the depiction of music. Dr. Ulrike Hascher-Burger is a musicologist at the Research Institute for History and Culture, Universiteit Utrecht, Netherlands. Her specialism is in mediaeval music, particularly the music of the “Devotio moderna”, on which topic she has published two monographs.
